In Tune Against The Toon: Arsenal 4 - 1 Newcastle – Report & Player Ratings

Final Score
Arsenal 4 - 1 Newcastle

On the back of a strong win against Galatasaray, Arsenal welcomed the Toon Army to the Emirates Stadium. Nothing less than three points would do.

The Gunners started well.

Sanchez, Giroud and Bellerin were Arsenal’s standout players going forward, and it only took fifteen minutes for the first goal to come. Sanchez crossed beautifully, and Giroud powered home the header.

The rest of the first half wasn’t anything to write home about, though.

“A poorly defended free kick (obviously) allowed Perez to head the ball quite well past a helpless Szczesney.”

In the second period, Sanchez popped up with another assist, this time for Santi Cazorla. The Spaniard picked up the ball inside the box, rode a tackle, and then beautifully chipped the ball across goal. An excellent finish.

Giroud’s second goal soon followed, in the fifty-eighth minute. Bellerin crossed hard and low, and the Frenchman managed to redirect it towards goal. It hit the near post and slammed into the net.

Five minutes later though, Newcastle managed to equalise. A poorly defended free kick (obviously) allowed Perez to head the ball quite well past a helpless Szczesney.

“Santi Cazorla stepped up, and did his best Pirlo impression…”

Thankfully though, Arsenal didn’t falter any more.

In fact, in the eighty-ninth minute, Welbeck was brought down in the box. Santi Cazorla stepped up, and did his best Pirlo impression. A cheeky chip down the middle to make it two for him, four for Arsenal.

Arsenal Player Ratings

Szczesney: [7/10]

A great double save in the first half. Otherwise, a quiet game overall, couldn’t do much for the goal.

Bellerin: [7.5/10]

Played very well. Made good runs on and off the ball, crossed very well, and got an assist for Giroud’s second.

Mertesacker: [6.5/10]

An easy game for him despite playing out of position. Hit the bar with a good header early in the game.

Debuchy: [6.5/10]

Played out of position, apparently. No evidence for that though.

Gibbs: [6.5/10]

Not great going forward, but he was very proactive defensively.

Cazorla: [8.5/10] - MOTM

Took his first goal brilliantly, and was very calm to score his penalty the way he did. Hid passing was poor at times though.

Flamini: [6/10]

Managed a couple of good tackles, fairly quiet game.

The Ox: [6.5/10]

Gave away a few passes, but he grew into the game as it went on.

Welbeck: [6/10]

His goal should have stood, and it was a good finish. Other than that though, he was slow to react, slow on the ball and made unintelligent runs when chances came along.

Sanchez: [8.5/10]

Our work horse got two assists today, and looked classy with every touch. Alexis was Alexis.

Giroud: [8.5/10] - MOTM

Both of Olivier’s goals were top drawer. His header was powerful, and sublime touch for the second goal was awesome. Worked hard, too.

In Tune Against The Toon

Arsenal haven’t played many good games this season, but tonight they did.

Giroud was outstanding, leading the line with Sanchez just behind him. Welbeck was underwhelming, but Chamberlain and Cazorla grew into the game to push Arsenal across the line.

Defensively, it wasn’t too bad either, even with the patchy lineup. However, another headed goal from a set piece remains a worry.
