Arsenal target Asier illaramendi is closer to making a move out of the Bernabue, after Real Madrid decided it’s time to offload him, according to Metro.
The Spanish midfielder who joined Madrid from Real Sociedad two seasons ago has not had the best of time at the Santiago Bernabeu, with former boss Carlo Ancelotti preferring Xabi Alonso and new signing Toni Kroos to him.
Illaramendi’s fortune at the Spanish capital is not about to change anytime soon, with new manager Rafa Benitez making it clear that he will only be a backup to Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, prompting the 25-year-old who has also been tracked by Liverpool to consider his options.
The reports also says the Reds currently lead the race to sign him, with long serving player Lucas Leiva set to leave Anfield after 9 years at the club.
Illara would be seen as an upgrade on the deep lying midfielder Leiva, and will partner Jordan Henderson.
Arsenal, despite being linked with a move for Illara this summer, are not short of options in central midfield with the likes of Francis Coquelin, Mikel Arteta, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla all fighting for two spots.
